Evolution is incompatible with fundamentalist religious beliefs. Similarly, a plan to mitigate global warming will involve central planning. Planning that libertarians and right wing conservatives are monolithically opposed against. Add to this mix sources of misinformation like Fox News and denialist blogs (wattsupwiththat) and unfortunately I don't see a clear path to progress. #6 is the largest obstacle for science and progress.
